Betchworth B-Line

B LINE LOGO

Extending the national scheme to create our very own biodiversity-rich wildflower corridor for insect pollinators.

B-Lines are an emerging, nation-wide solution to help nature reverse the massive decline of insect pollinators essential for crop production for both human and animal food.

They are a network of 3km wide ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which wildflower-rich habitat are being restored and created as steppingstones, not only providing food for pollinators but enhancing their ability to migrate. B-Lines link existing wildlife areas together, creating a railway-like network that will weave across the British landscape.

Inspired by the concept of a B-Line we are working with the Parish Council, Betchworth residents, Buglife and Surrey Wildlife Trust to create a Betchworth Biodiversity Line that runs north-south through the Parish.

Biodiversity-in-surrey

b -line mapIn the late winter and spring of 2023 40 residents and businesses in north Betchworth signed up to create their own mini wildflower meadow, ranging from a single flowerpot or trough to several or square metres of garden.  Re-Betchworth supplied a seed mix rich in native perennial wildflowers, enough for some 1400sqm.

This autumn we are now extending our B-Line to the southern parish boundary and have invited residents who live south of Old Reigate Road to sow a few square metres of wildflower seed.   Again, we are providing a mix of seed suitable for the soil types in our area and advice on preparing the ground.  All we ask is that they provide us with feedback on whether the seeds germinate and flower so that we can record and appreciate the results of our combined efforts.

Please get in touch with a member of the B-Line team If you live in Betchworth and  are willing to cultivate a wildflower mini meadow.  We will provide seeds, guidance and practical help if necessary.
