Staying Safe Online
A truly sustainable community relies on mutual care and resilience in all areas of our daily lives, including how we navigate the digital world, building a stronger, safer future for us all. But how do we do this?
Online banking, shopping, emails, text messages and more are all part of everyday life, but how do you know who you can trust? How can you tell if a message from your bank is genuine? What should you do if you receive a suspicious text? And how on earth are you supposed to remember all those passwords?
Come to our free IT security session and find out:
23 November at 7pm
Hamilton Room
Betchworth RH3 7DN
We are hosting a practical, jargon-free workshop right here in Betchworth to help everyone master the basics of online safety. Mick Cock, who leads on IT security for a major civil engineering company, will be running a friendly, informal session for villagers, particularly aimed at those who don't consider themselves technology experts.
Mick will talk about:
-
how to create good passwords that are still easy to remember
-
which passwords are particularly important to protect
-
what two-factor authentication is and why it helps
-
how to recognise phishing emails, scam texts and fraudulent phone calls
-
what to do when you're not sure if a message or caller is genuine
-
how to use online banking and other online services more safely
-
what to do if you think you've fallen for a scam.
This isn’t a technical lecture. It will be an informal and interactive session, using real-life examples and giving you simple, practical, easy to remember rules. So, don't forget to bring your phone, tablet or whatever device you use most often for online banking, shopping, news and other life admin.
You’ll also have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss scams or suspicious messages you've encountered yourself. As Mike says, “in IT security, there is no such thing as a stupid question”.
