Scything on Goulburn Green
Five years on, at its peak in late June, the wildflower display on Goulburn Green gave as much pleasure as ever. However, this year’s prolonged drought hastened the seed setting, and by late August it was ready for its annual ‘mow’. Mowing the traditional way, that is, with scythes...
Scything is by far the best way to cut wildflowers, leaving no shreds to inadvertently enrich the soil. It’s surprisingly easy once you've established a good rhythm, and hugely satisfying too, as the team's smiles confirm!
The conservation volunteer team, members of the 4Bs Nature WhatsApp Group have now taken oversight of the strip as another element of their work to increase and improve habitats for wildlife and enhance biodiversity across the parishes of Betchworth, Buckland, Brockham and the neighbourhood of Box Hill. 12 adults and five wonderfully enthusiastic children soon completed the job; so now it’s left to nature to do the rest and bring everything back into glorious flower next spring.
