The Betchworth Wassail 2026

Get the 2026 Wassail in your calendars now! Not to be missed - Saturday 17 January at 4.30pm at the village orchard.

Please join us for some mildly bonkers fun at the village Wassail on Saturday 17 January to ‘bless’ the apple trees in the village orchard next to Golbourn Green. Last year’s Wassail must have worked as
2025 saw a bumper crop of apples in the village!

Children are especially welcome; we want to give them a bigger role to play this year – a special chant of their own and much more toast to hang in the trees.

If you're wondering what this is all about...a Wassail is a time-honoured, weird and wonderful ceremony to welcome in good spirits and scare away the not-so-good ones to keep the trees in good health. We’ll be pouring warmed cider over the roots of the trees and the kids will hang toast in the branches to attract the good spirits (and the robins!).

Enjoy a glass of mulled cider and other refreshments as you take the opportunity to get together in community. Bring a thermos mug for your drink. Dress colourful and crazy, warm and wild. Wear daft hats (toppers are traditional). Bring drums, pots, pans and sticks as we need to make as much noise as we can. The Wassail chant will help – and of course lots of merriment, music, and more mulled cider...

We could do with some volunteers to help jug up the mulled cider, top up the thermos jugs and hand round some nibbles – an opportunity to meet new locals. If you’re up for that please send Claire a text or WhatsApp on 07968 121581.

There’s no charge, but we’ll be passing around a bucket for cash donations to cover the cost of the refreshments (for the humans as well as the trees).
